Seventeen-year-old, Antwon Rose was shot and killed by a policeman in East Pittsburgh on June 19th. Before the shots were fired, Antwon and two other boys were seen in what looked like a car from a shooting earlier in the day, and were stopped by police. Rose began to run from the car and was shot immediately. He was unarmed. This shooting has sparked outrage within the Pittsburgh community, which has led to various protests throughout the city in hopes to bring attention to the Black Lives Matter movement and justice for Rose.

Strolling through Market Square, we approached people in order to hear opinions on this current issue in Pittsburgh. Natalia Holliday, 28-year-old Duquesne Law student, noted that she agreed with and understands the protests surrounding the death of Antwon Rose. She explained how she had not put much thought into the situation, but she agreed it was very upsetting. Her brief moments of thought about the unsettling situation occurred when she was looking over the city, she said just this morning she realized, “it’s a Pittsburgh thing now,” referring to the shootings and ongoing debate on the issues at hand with police and civil disobedience. She continued to educate us on her input by stating that she thinks policemen need to fit better and understand the community they work in.
