Summer 2018

The 2018 Summer Journalism workshop sponsored by the School of Communication at Point Park University was held June 25 – June 28, 2018.  The purpose of the workshop is to expose high school students to various aspects of journalism, photography, multimedia and video as well as have them interact with the Pittsburgh community and its media professionals.

This year, high school students from around the Pittsburgh community (and beyond) learned about writing, interviewing, photography, video and web design.   In addition, the workshop sponsored speakers and visits to media sites in the community.
Professional Visits:

  • Students had a private behind-the-scenes tour of KDKA plus they watched several blocks of the 5pm newscast.
  • They visited the Washington Wild Things where they learned about the video production that goes into what fans view on the scoreboard and online.  They then stayed to watch the Wild Things beat the Windy City Tunderbolts .
  • Students also had a behind-the-scenes media tour of PPG Paints Arena led by Pittsburgh Penguins VP of Communications.

Media Professionals:

  • Andy Conte, former Trib reporter and Director of the Point Park Center for Media Innovation, discussed interviewing techniques.
  • Rachel Carlson, Pittsburgh Community &  Marketing Director for Yelp, discussed social media.
  • Celina Pompeani, Pens TV & Morning Traffic Reporter for KDKA, discussed various aspects of her career and how she arrived where she is today.
  • Rebecca Lessner, Photographer/Photo Journalist, discussed the technical aspects of photography and environmental issues in Pittsburgh.
  • David Grande, former journalist, worked steadily with the students on writing and interviewing techniques.
  • Several other Point Park faculty members and Pittsburgh community members discussed their professions and careers with the high school students and also served as sources for several of the students stories.
